Cashew is a tropical crop which grows best in the warm and tropical climate of coastal regions. It is but natural that the west coast parts of Karnataka including Mangalore are well-known centers of cashew production and related industries. Many cashew processing industries are thriving in this coastal region as cashew forms a major item of import and export of this part of the coastal region. The plantation crop of cashew was a gift from the Portuguese to India and today India has emerged as one of the major producers of cashew. Indian cashews are also famed for its superior quality. About 40 % of raw cashew and 70 % of cashew kernels of the world are produced in India.
